When I first came across Mon's artwork, I was just blown away! Created from a passion of the sea, the intricate details she captures in her art are expert-level. And indeed, that's what she is! As a free diver, scuba dive instructor, and spearfisherwoman, Mon has travelled and dived all over the world, drawing inspiration from tropical coral reefs to temperate kelp forests. Her work has inspired many (in fact, she has become somewhat of an international sensation), and she strongly believes in the deep connection between people and the ocean. Through her work, Mon hopes to promote a love of the sea and all of its creatures. She is a strong environmental stewardess, a big advocate for responsible fishing and sustainability to help maintain our ecosystems for future generations. As a big fan myself, I couldn't wait to interview her about her journey as an artist, and share any tips and advice she has with you all. We hope you love Mon's art as much as we do!
Hey Mon! Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Mon, I'm based in Australia but I'm originally from New Zealand, I’ve always had a deep connection with the sea. For my whole life I’ve explored the world’s oceans as a free diver, scuba dive instructor, and spearfisherwoman. These experiences have shaped my artistic journey, specializing in marine illustrations that capture the beauty and mystery of life beneath the surface. Art isn’t just a passion for me—it’s my full-time job, and I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to combine my love for the ocean with my creative career.
What inspired you to specialize in underwater art?
My love for the ocean and its incredible biodiversity is what truly inspired me. The way marine life moves and interacts in its natural environment captivates me. I also feel a sense of responsibility to use my art to raise awareness about ocean conservation. Every dive, every encounter with marine life fills me with a sense of awe, and I want to translate that into my illustrations, allowing others to see the beauty and vulnerability of our oceans.
Can you share one of your most memorable experiences while diving/photographing underwater?
One of my most unforgettable experiences was diving in Raja Ampat, Indonesia. The sheer biodiversity on that dive was incredible—I was surrounded by dugongs, manta rays, dolphins, sharks, turtles, all on a single dive! The colorful soft corals were equally mesmerizing, like something out of a dream. It was a surreal experience, and capturing that moment with my camera was such a privilege. I still draw so much inspiration from that dive in my artwork today.
How do you stay updated on the latest techniques and technologies in your art?
I’m mostly self-taught, but I’m always seeking ways to grow and evolve as an artist. I attend workshops, explore online courses, and follow other artists who inspire me. In terms of technology, I stay up to date with advancements in digital tools like procreate and adobe illustrator, underwater photography equipment, and new materials that can make my products more sustainable.
Can you share any tips or advice for aspiring underwater artists?
I would say getting to spend a lot of time in the ocean. Learn about the marine life and ecosystems you want to capture. Don’t be afraid to take risks and experiment with your art. Your personal encounters and experiences will bring authenticity to your work. Also, use photography to your advantage. Taking reference photos while diving can help you capture intricate details that are often difficult to remember once you’re back on land. Lastly, stay patient—it takes time to develop your skills and find your unique style, but the journey is incredibly rewarding.
What are your favorite locations or dive sites to get inspiration for your art, and why?
My favorite dive sites would have to be all around the South Pacific, as a lot of my art focuses on tropical marine life. The vibrant colors and diversity of the region inspire much of my work. However, I’ve also started drawing cooler water subjects. New Zealand, for example, has so many unique cold-water dive sites with equally interesting creatures, and those dives have been inspiring my art in new ways as well.
Have you ever encountered any unexpected or dangerous situations while photographing/diving underwater?
Interestingly, it’s never been from anything in the water itself. However, I’ve had some close calls with boats not following the rules and not slowing down around where we are diving even when we have had a float or dive flag up.
How do you think underwater art can contribute to marine conservation efforts?
Art has a unique way of evoking emotions and telling stories that words alone often can’t. Through my underwater illustrations, I hope to give viewers a sense of the beauty and fragility of marine ecosystems. By showcasing the wonders of the ocean, I aim to inspire others to take action in protecting these environments. Art can be a powerful tool for advocacy, raising awareness about critical issues like overfishing, plastic pollution, and climate change. My goal is for people to leave my work with a stronger connection to nature and a greater sense of responsibility for conserving our oceans.
