Where will you visit
Diving in Kona at the end of October offers some of the best underwater conditions of the year. Hawaii’s fall season brings calm seas, excellent visibility, and warm water temperatures averaging around 79–81°F (26–27°C), making it perfect for comfortable, extended dives. The ocean is alive with activity during this time, and the late fall weather creates the ideal setting for both underwater exploration and surface relaxation.
October is also the tail end of Hawaii’s "dry season," meaning you’re likely to enjoy sunny skies and minimal rain—a bonus for photography both above and below the water. The water clarity is exceptional, often exceeding 100 feet, giving you a crystal-clear view of the vibrant reefs, lava formations, and marine life that Kona is famous for.
During this time of year, Kona’s marine life is thriving. Manta rays are frequently spotted, especially during night dives where they gather to feed on plankton illuminated by dive lights. This is also an exciting time for spotting dolphins, Hawaiian green sea turtles, and a variety of reef fish in their most active states. You might even encounter migratory species, as the end of October is when certain pelagic animals, like tuna and mahi-mahi, pass through Hawaiian waters.
Trip leader and Underwater Photography
Francesca is an underwater photographer and scuba diving instructor from the United States and currently based in Byron Bay, Australia. With over 10 years of diving experience, she has a passion for capturing the beauty of the underwater world and has dedicated herself to the art of underwater photography.
While she loves all the critters under the water, her heart belongs with pelagics and large species like manta rays, sharks, and dolphins! To Francesca there is nothing quite like sharing space with animals like this and really reminds her how, when we are diving, we get a glimpse into their world. She will always remind you to keep looking out into the blue during your dives to have a chance at spotting these awe-inspiring creatures!
Francesca’s photography career has taken her all over the world, from Hawaii, Roatan, Indonesia, Australia, and even living on an expedition sailboat for six months! Her deep connection to the ocean and its inhabitants fuels her work, as she strives to share the wonder and importance of these magnificent animals with others.
A fun fact is at 16 years old, Francesca got her open water certification in Kona, Hawaii! Ever since it has been a special place to her and her dive career.
